Flaxseed: An Easy Superfood To Include In Your Diet
Flax, also known as linseed is often grown for its seeds
which are usually purchased milled, as meal or as linseed oil. It is a commonly
used nutritional supplement. The seeds come in two varieties; brown and
yellow/golden.
Most varieties have very similar nutritional
characteristics, excluding ‘Linola’ which has a different profile and is
uncharacteristically low in Omega-3 fatty acids.
Flax is classified as a superfood for its many benefits to
human health.
Flaxseed is very high in fibre but low in carbohydrates and
therefore is often favoured to resolve digestive issues. It moves predominately
through the gut undigested, assisting other gut contents through the tract. Its
high soluble and insoluble fibre content is often favoured for weight loss as it
allows the stomach to feel fuller for longer, curb sugar cravings and is
beneficial for colon detoxification.
Flaxseed contains high amount of antioxidants such as the
omega-3 fatty acid, ALA which has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as lignin
which additionally aids hormonal balance. ALA is identified to reduce heart
disease, lower blood pressure, improve the immune system functionality, reduce inflammation,
reduce heart flutters and protect arterial function.
The essential fatty acids also improve acne and similar skin
conditions as well as promote shiny, strong hair. Healthy hair and nails are
further supported by flaxseeds due to its high healthy fat content.
Flaxseeds naturally reduce fat content in the blood and
lower cholesterol making it a favourite for dieters.
The best part? Only one or two tablespoons are required in
the diet daily before you are able to see improvements!
It is easy to add to shakes, smoothies, yoghurt or porridge
without overpowering the natural flavours but adds a crispy texture to the
dish.
What’s not to love… so give it a try!
